| Great concept... | 2010-07-26 | 4 / 5 |
| | I'm not sure if I would have found this useful in college. Back then, I didn't mind using regular "hard cover" binders. Their strength was important, and trumped their bulk/weight. These days (mom of two) I'm looking for something I can throw in my bag, take into the grocery store, Target, etc. that will have everything I need: TO DO lists, shopping lists, coupons, etc. I used to use a regular Mead notebook, but hated the fact that I couldn't move the pages around. When I saw this, I thought "HEY! This is gonna be perfect for me." It's everything I need in a notebook with the flexibility to re-order pages like a binder. Love it. |
| Nice & Light | 2010-07-21 | 4 / 5 |
| Pros: Light weight. Flexible so it if you're carrying it in a backpack, it doesn't dig into your back. Pages can be removed and returned like in a traditional looseleaf notebook. Five subject dividers that have plastic to protect handouts, including two which have index card pockets. Includes some ruled paper and some graph paper, and takes standard size looseleaf paper.
Cons: Each ring needs to be opened and closed separately, as opposed to traditional looseleaf notebooks in which a lever opens all 3 rings simultaneously and squeezing one ring closes them all. Providing 5 dividers is a little ridiculous as the rings and spine are nowhere near thick enough to accommodate enough pages for 5 subjects. The plastic of the dividers is cheap and may not last long, and the index card pockets are flat and won't hold many cards. The fabric spine has cutouts in the back to accommodate the rings, and the cutouts are not finished in any way, so the spine may eventually unravel. As in all looseleaf notebooks, if you lean on the paper as you write, it will start to tear at the rings. You have to train yourself pretty well if you want your pages to last a semester or longer, or you must use paper w/ reinforced holes.
Despite all the cons, I like the functionality of a looseleaf w/ less weight and stiffness. However, I don't expect it to be usable for more than a year while a traditional looseleaf notebook can last me three. |
| Five Stars..? | 2010-04-10 | 5 / 5 |
| If your sick of having to replace hardcover binders and flimsy sheet protectors every semester, this is the binder for you.
It's been rained on, snowed on, slept on, stepped on and more and it still looks and functions like I bought it yesterday. Since the cover is just over-sized enough to protect its contents, all my papers and notes still look pristine as well.
The tabbed sheet protectors are perfect for holding syllabi and dividing your notes for each class, and the 2 half folders that are included have a built in pocket that are meant to hold index cards but also work great as a place to hold extra writing utensils.
I love the flexible cover and cloth spine; I can shove it my purse when needed and doesn't crack or tear along the seams like other binders do when stepped on or bent the wrong way. Plus, they allowed me to put in a notebook 3 hole punch, a 4 inch tall planner, and store my writing utensils in the aforementioned pocket without compromising its ability to close properly or provide a sturdy, flat writing surface when taking notes on either side of the paper. It also eliminates that annoying paper curve that happens when you folder standard binders in half instead of leaving them fully open (great for small desks or lab classes where you're sitting on a stool with limited table surface).
I did ditch the included paper and bought some reinforced kind.. I figure the price difference would equal out when I didn't have to throw out have a pack a semester because it would fall out or get wrinkled beyond use.
I'm definitely considering buying a few more of these for work and home filing. |
| Does the job | 2010-03-17 | 4 / 5 |
| | I don't wish to disappoint anyone looking for an insightful review of a binder. This does the job, and isn't that really all that matters here? |
| Remaking the Trapper Keeper. | 2010-03-11 | 3 / 5 |
| | As soon as I saw Mead's Five Star Flex Hybrid Notebinder, it reminded me of Trapper Keepers, essentially decorated plastic covered carboard three ring binders, with a velcro flap. I went through several in third grade. The hybrid notebinder, though is quite different in several important ways. First, the rings are surprisingly left hanging out, which could lead to them hooking on random things in a backpack and also suffering the brunt of abuse in daily use. While as other reviewers note they are fairly difficult to separate, it's hard not to wonder if frequent use would change that. This design brings to mind the basic problem with spiral notebooks, namely the spiral, that over time will get bent, snagged, and slowly unraveled. Considering the three rings are what will keep everything inside, I think the notebinder would be best for someone that won't place it in a backpack, locker, which to would seem to eliminate the biggest crowd of middle school, high school, and perhaps college students. |
