WD Advanced Format technology increases media format efficiency, thus enabling larger drive capacities. WD Advanced Format drives are specifically optimized for Mac and the latest Windows operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. WD Advanced Format drives work with legacy operating systems such as Windows XP but require the use of the free WD Align software available on www.wdc.com/advformat.
Available in capacities up to 2 TB, WD CaviarĀ® GreenTM SATA hard drives reduce power consumption by up to 40% and offer best-in-class acoustics and operating temperature. Based on WD's exclusive GreenPowerTM technology, these drives are designed to deliver power savings as the primary attribute. As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation. They are ideal for PCs, external storage and other devices that require lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

Running this as a storage drive on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit in an Antec P180.
Installation of the drive was relatively easy with slight differences when compared to other lower capacity drives. This installation required use of disk management in Windows to assign a drive letter and format the drive, as compared to other HDDs where the drive appeared in Windows Explorer and prompted that a format was necessary when it was seleceted.
Has been running for a solid month. Transfer speeds are noticeably slower but not unexpected for a "green" drive. Did not noticeably contribute to noise or heat generation. |

It is quickly obvious from the reviews that this drive is not without significant problems for some users in some situations. This is true for many hard drives, so I decided to take a chance.
My point for this review is that if you experience known problems, it is far better to recognize the situation early by doing a format and chkdsk before any use of the drive. I made the mistake of doing a server install using a fresh format, but I neglected to look at the results until AFTER everything was completed. After a full day of security downloads, configuring, etc., I noticed that I was missing 890 Gb! Chkdsk quickly revealed that the missing space was marked as bad sectors. I will attempt to recover the installation with an image transfer, but I am skeptical. I wish I had checked the drive at the beginning.
If you get this drive and have problems with bad sectors, hopefully you will be able to avoid my experience by a thorough format and chkdsk before putting it into use. |

I was running of space on my Windows Home Server and after some reviewing I bought this hard drive. So far in my server I have used 4 500GB and two 1TB Western Digital green drives.Never had a problem with any of them. The 500's model numbers end with AADS and the 1TB's EADS. since these worked for me I decided to stay in this product line. After realising that the 2TB EADS drives cost about $40 more than this model I decided to try this one. I did my research first and after reading many reviews I used wdidle3 to disable the head parking timer before I installed the drive into my server (I also ran it on the other drives).
After this the drive installed without any problem and is working very well.
P.S. If you need to run wdidle3 to upgrade your firmware you must boot the cd from an IDE cd drive. I tried running it on my pc but all the drives connected are sata so the bootable cd would not load. Luckily my server has an IDE drive so I ran it on that and updated all of my drives(I had to reboot and connect one drive at a time to update them). |

If you plan to use this on a Mac, Unix/Linux or a NAS, forget it. WD does not support non-windows platforms.
Search the web for "wdidle" and be shocked; the core feature of the "green" functionality is parking the heads when the HD is idle. But the timer is so small that on most operating systems you will get like 100s of load/unload cycles in an hour, expiring the projected lifetime of the product in a matter of months. The only known workaround is to run such "wdidle" program in a DOS environment to disable this functionality - could we still call it "green" after that?
If you have a desktop computer that can both plug the drive into and run this DOS utility, it might be worth buying this drive. Otherwise forget it. I'm definitely not buying another from WD, and I'll probably return this product if I'm unable to find a PC to perform such procedure. |

Advanced format mainly means that it will write to 4k sectors, while the default has usually been 512byte sectors. This is only a concern to those using Windows xp or older, and when using a cloning app to copy a harddrive. The transition has been 10 years in the making and gives performance enhancements in better format efficiency, better ECC burst error correction, better overall error rate capability, and not to mention that all drives over 2TB and by 2011 will use 4k sectors. More info at WD website and for more technical info, at Anandtech website.
About the harddrive I recieved, , you need to do a better job of packaging. Recieved mine right when they got they're 2tb stock replenished. The drive was in an anti-static bag with the eggcarton type holders suspending it in a WD labled plain box. This box was then placed inside a larger box with no airbubbles or stuffing, allowing the WD box to slide about 4 inches top and bottom. Did a full format and drive error check to make sure everything was ok in Win7. Already have it half full with backup data and running good for 3 days straight now. |
