HP D1660 Printer2010-09-033 / 5
Before I begin, my complaint with this printer is that it DOESN'T come with a USB cable. It lists what is packaged within on top of the box, so if you're wondering if the exclusion of a USB cable was an accident, it's not. They're selling you a printer with a cable that can be bought for a couple of bucks, easily. I guess for $30, they need to cut some edges.

Firstly, the installation of this printer was way harder than it should have been, for what it is. Fortunately, HP gives you the option to skip the installation of all their shovelware. Out of the ten programs the printer could have installed, I ended up only installing three. So, when you hit that part of the installation, make sure to customize what you're saving onto your computer.

Secondly, one of the cartridges doesn't work. I took the color and B/W cartridges out, removed the tape and placed them into the printer. The printer gave me an error that one of them wasn't working right. Only the B/W cartridge showed an ink level, while the color was nowhere to be seen. I removed it, made sure the tape wasn't there, and then placed it back. No luck. I took another look and put it back in, making sure that it clicked into position. Still, no luck. So for now, I took it out and I'm running the printer on only a B/W cartridge.

After that, the printer power light was still blinking and none of my print jobs would print. I restarted the printer and restarted the computer and finally, it began printing. There's some downtime in between the time when you click print and the printer starts its job, and its quite noisy. But, for $30, I can ignore these problems. It's the absence of a USB cable and all the installation troubles that really bother me.

For the price? I recommend it, as you get what you pay for. I'm only using it to print my homework for class. If you have jobs more demanding than that, I suggest you aim higher and stay away from the HP brand. My experience with HP(two printers, a desktop and a laptop) hasn't been the best by a longshot.
You get what you pay for!2010-08-312 / 5
I did not buy my HP Deskjet D1660 from , but I really wanted to share my experiences with other shoppers.

I titled my review "You get what you pay for!" meaning the ink refills for this unit are $30. The printer itself cost $30, and it came with ink. Since HP obviously makes it's money from ink, and not from printers, you just paid for the ink and got a "FREE" printer!!!

With that said, this is a pretty darn good printer for "FREE". It's small and looks pretty. It only has one button on it, but the button isn't labeled, it just flashes a lot and nothing happens when you push it. The printer was simple to set up, as long as you follow HP's instructions to the letter, not trying to find a way to avoid installing the tons of extra crud that comes on the disk. It is whisper quiet when it prints, but when it goes through the head cleaning cycle it sounds like a washing machine with an uneven load. The print quality is very good, when the printer actually prints... yep, half the time ya hit print and your document just hangs out in the print queue while they mystery button lights up and flashes. No problem, just unplug everything (the only way to delete an item from the print queue is to power down the unit: press and hold the mystery button for 2 minutes, then go ahead and disconnect the USB cable). The coolest feature with this printer is it TELLS you when to order more ink, and even opens an "HP Order Form" window that locks up your desktop! The best part is, you are not "ACTUALLY" out of ink, you are "SOON TO BE" out of ink, but this feature renders the printer useless so you don't accidentally run out of ink while printing something! Nor will it let you switch to gray scale to use up the black ink, cuz the "ALMOST EMPTY" color cartridge might feel left out.

Now that I'm talking about the ink... I print very little. To be fair, I'd estimate my print volume averages out to about 1 page per week, SERIOUSLY. I bought my printer December 2009 and needed ink by July 2010. So that's about 30 pages to a set of ink cartridges (which are not totally empty, but the printer will no longer view as acceptable). If you want to print Christmas cards or something, you better stock up on ink. The best deal is the Black & Color combo for $30. They do offer XL "High Volume" ink for this unit, but at nearly 3 times the price, I'm not so sure you are getting 3 times the ink.

So, like I said, this is basically a "FREE" printer. You just have to decide if the price is worth all the headaches that come along with it. I'm gonna hold on to mine for now, but if I get a good recommendation on a different unit, I won't hesitate to throw this one in the trash.

I bought mine at Walmare for about thirty bucks. Nothing fancy with this thing, but great for simple printing like college papers.
Waste of money2010-08-311 / 5
I actually bought that at the store during a back to school sale. All I needed was a printer to print out papers, and this worked great for the first week. All of a sudden it had paper jams without pulling paper into the printer. It claimed to be out of paper even though it had just pulled two sheets of paper through the machine without actually printing. It would give me an error message stating the the front was open when it wasn't. So far this printer is costing me more than $3 a page. If you add in the cost of the usb cable (which you have to buy separately) the cost per page is much higher. I would not purchase this product again nor would I let a friend buy it.
Great printing for the bucks!2010-08-205 / 5
I suppose I am fortunate in that I have not experienced the problems that others have. I have waited a year since purchasing this printer to write a review. Am I ecstatic? No. Will this printer solve all of your printing problems? No. However, in my experience, this printer will perform a yeoman's job on your everyday printing needs. I purchased this when I needed an emergency printer while my large Canon was in the shop. I have since used it as the primary printer for my laptop (on my third ink cartridge) since it is small enough to be portable. Used with my prior laptop with an Intel Atom chip and 2 GB of RAM, I ran into memory problems when printing while online; I solved this problem by saving the items I wish to print as PDF files and printing them while off-line. My present lap top has an Intel iCore3 chip with 4 GB of RAM. The extra memory has solved many of the delay problems. The problem seems to be that the printer relies entirely on the computer for memory, resulting in something of a 'conflict of interest' when it comes to printing large documents. Therefore, the more memory required by the program(s) you are running, the less memory is available for the printer, and the slower the printer will run. I have found that patience is truly a virtue with this printer. Sometimes, you just need to walk away and give the printer a chance (sometimes a loooooong chance.) Early on, I mistook printer delay for printer error and rebooted, or canceled and resent the print job, which simply put off the inevitable solution of 'patience'. Give the printer time, and it will serve you well. As for the USB cable, no present printers seem to come with them. The last time I received a connection cable for a printer was about 15 years ago with the original HP DeskJet. That cable was a serial RS-232 cable, and was supplied with the printer back when that was the only interface used. Since cables come in different lengths and printers are placed varying distances from the computer, it makes more sense to allow the customer to purchase the needed cable separately from the printer. Now that I have written this, the printer may die tomorrow. So what? I got my $38 worth out of it and will gladly purchase another (plus, I have to use up all of my spare ink cartridges).
