Your backyard can be the source of the best eggs and meat you've ever tasted. The answer is chickens--endearing birds that require but a modest outlay of time, space and food.

As they learned to raise chickens, Gail and Rick Luttmann came to realize the need for a comprehensive but clear and nontechnical guide. Their book covers all the basics in a light and entertaining sytle, from housing and feeding through incubating, bringing up chicks, butchering, and raising chickens for show.

Througout the book, the Luttmanns express their wonder at the personalities of chickens--the role of brash protector played by roosters, and the instinctive motherliness of the hens. Given some freedom and attention, these birds can become much more than the egg-and-meat machines of commercial hatcheries and broiler factories. Chickens provide backyard farmers with enjoyable pastime, as well as a supply of good food.

    Too basic...2010-05-012 / 5
This book is just *too* basic, if you don't know this stuff you probably shouldn't be thinking about raising chickens in the first place.
Just not worth the money, in my opinion.
    Good book to start with2009-12-084 / 5
This is an older book (mid-70's publication) but a great place to start if you know nothing about keeping chickens. It's not breed specific but good general information on bird anatomy and behavior, care, feeding, potential problems and solutions. A good, fast read for anyone interested in raising a small flock.

This book is very helpful for people who want to raise chickens at home. It is packed with information and ideas to get you started and to help as you expand your flock.
not worthwhile and not like new2009-07-081 / 5
the narrative tone is not informative and the seller falsely listed this item as like new.
    Good Book, Bad Company2009-04-204 / 5
I initially ordered two (2) books from . This book was excellent, which they sent me two (2) copies of and billed me for two copies also. The other book, "Chicken Coops, 45 Building Plans For Housing Your Flock" turned out to be a total sham. There were several interesting coops, however, there were no "Plans" except for the most basic of information. I was angry about my order, since I was sent two copies of the same book, and canceled " Prime" the same day I received my order. To add insult to injury, my bank account was charged $79.00 three days ago for a program that I opted not to receive the same day I received my order.

The second book, "Chickens In Your Backyard" had a wealth of information and also offered some very important advice for building Chicken Coops. If you're new to raising chickens, then this book would be a "must-read" publication for those of us that are just beginning to raise our own flocks. Find a reputable company to purchase these books, otherwise you'll wind-up like me - out over a hundred dollars for a twelve or thirteen dollar book.
